First graders at Hanawalt were recently visited by Gail Peckumn from the Des Moines Water Works. Students were introduced to the water cycle and how the water is cleaned for us to use. Students learned about the importance of water conservation, and not adding pollutants. They learned that water can be cleaned through a multi-step process, including the use of rocks cleaning water. This in class visit was a great culmination to our science hands-on study of pebbles, sand, and silt. We appreciate the opportunity to have these types of programs provided by the Urban Environmental Partnership.
We are very excited about the implementation of a new district writing program, “Being a Writer.” Students are learning how we work as a community to become better writers. As we move through the writing program, students will be sharing their work with one another in order to help each other make their writing pieces even better. We look forward to a year of great writing. Please ask your child to share some of the topics they have been writing about in class.
